A pub has hit the ground running and won an award just a few months after opening its doors.

The Crafty Kernel, on Kirkgate, Shipley, won the autumn Pub of the Season award, which was presented by the Bradford branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) yesterday (Sunday).

"They've made an excellent first impression," said Peter Down, Bradford CAMRA pubs officer. "They've hit the ground running.

"They do offer a varying range of quality real ales, including gluten-free varieties.

"Our members do weekly social events over the season, and they discovered the Crafty Kernel when they were out in the middle of Shipley.

"We had seen the building being refurbished before it opened in early 2022."

Zoe Carlton, who runs the pub with her husband Reece, said: "This award has come as a complete surprise. We had no clue at all that we were going to receive it.

"We've only been open for nine months. It's such a short period of time to win such an accolade.

"It took us six months to refurbish the building (which was a former charity shop) and this award has cemented to us that what we're doing is right.

"We have a regular clientele and we've been received with open arms in Shipley.

"We're very proud. I'm also really proud of my husband as he does all the beers."

Reece, who is gluten intolerant, was pleased that CAMRA also recognised the pub for its gluten-free offering.

"Our customers really appreciate it that we offer gluten-free beers," said Reece. "A lot of people a really surprised that they can taste great.

"It's just an enzyme that's dropped into the beer that takes the gluten out of it. It doesn't change the taste at all.

"I've always been a fan of real ale beers, but I used to have to drink cider because gluten-free beer wasn't readily available. It was very frustrating.

"It was in Spain of all places that I discovered gluten-free beer years ago.

"Then people started making an effort to offer it over here.

"Most people can't tell the difference and some people actually prefer the gluten-free ones.

"People like to come into the Crafty Kernel to experience different beers and we give them the opportunity to do that.

"We're just really surprised to receive an award so soon after opening.

"It's great when you set your standards high, stick to your guns and get recognised for it."
