Residents living on a Bradford street blighted by fly-tipping have likened the experience to living on a skip yard.

Airedale College Road, in Undercliffe, has been littered with mattresses, furniture, carpets, wall insulation and much more over the past three months.

Frustrated residents have been urging Bradford Council to take action – from filming vehicles dumping rubbish on the road to working with street wardens.

It inspired some neighbours to hold their own clean-up operation but the fly-tipper later returned with more waste.

One resident sent footage to the Council showing just one example of a suspected fly-tipper by the site at the end of autumn.

Now in January, the Council has arranged for an inspection of the site and launched the prosecution process for a suspected offender.

One mum who lives nearby said: “They said that they’d work with us to remove it but then they were saying they’d run out of money. They wanted to close the road but some of the neighbours said no because it’s a cut through road when it’s snowing and they couldn’t do that. They were looking for other ways to do it.

“A few of my neighbours were tidying up down there last year.

“I just felt like they weren’t doing anything to solve the problem.

“I’ve seen a few rats running around and foxes as well. We do have foxes because of the graveyard.

“It’s not a nice area to be living in, a messy environment. We’re trying to keep the street clean for the people but the Council are not helping us.

“The council wardens, they’ve given me a contact number for themselves. I rang the man while I was shopping, told them there’d been fly tipping and he said they’d ring back. That was in November.”

She added: “It’s an awful environment for the kids around the area. I feel like I live on a skip yard.”

A Council spokesperson said: “Sadly, Airedale College Road has suffered from fly tipping for some considerable time. As an unadopted road, the council is not legally responsible for clearing up the detritus. Nonetheless, in the past, the council has assisted by clearing fly-tipping, undertaking surveillance to catch those responsible and engaging residents to help them to assist to identify offenders.

“We continue to undertake surveillance and we are just in the process of prosecuting an offender who was identified as responsible for fly-tipping. In response to the current request for assistance, a joint inspection involving the council’s teams and residents is due imminently and the tipped material will then be removed.

“We will continue to seek to identify and prosecute those responsible for this anti-social and unacceptable behaviour.”
