THE police watchdog has issued a further statement following a crash which left a young mum dead.

The collision happened on Baildon Road (B6151), Baildon, near its junction with Pasture Road, at 11.47pm on Tuesday evening.

A witness said the vehicle - a silver Vauxhall Vectra - came off the road and flipped into a position where it meant the car's roof hit a wall first.

Police said the vehicle failed to stop for them and was being pursued by officers at the time of the crash and a referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

The collision provoked a major response from emergency services, with multiple police vehicles, ambulances and the fire service believed to have rushed to the scene.

A spokesperson for the IOPC has this afternoon revealed six people had been travelling in the car.

They also said Amber Deakin, 18, of Queens Road, a mother of a 16-month old son and described as "larger than life" by her mum in a tribute, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four people, three men and a woman, were rushed to hospital for treatment.

The IOPC spokesperson said another man, who was understood to have been in the car, was found later and arrested by West Yorkshire Police.

He received medical attention while in custody.

IOPC Regional Director Thea Walton said: “I would like to offer our condolences to the family and loved ones of the young woman who died in this tragic incident. Our thoughts are with all those affected.

“It is important that we understand the events leading up to the collision. Our independent investigation will be thorough and look at the actions and decision-making of police.

“As our work is at an early stage and it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”

A full statement from the IOPC said: "The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has begun an investigation into the circumstances of a fatal collision in Bradford last night (3 January).

"We received a mandatory referral from West Yorkshire Police following the incident on Baildon Road advising that a silver Vauxhall Vectra had failed to stop for officers, and a pursuit was subsequently authorised, shortly before the collision at around 11.50pm.

"We have established there were six people travelling in the vehicle.

"An 18-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Four people, three men and a woman, were taken to hospital for treatment.

"Another man, who we understand to have been in the vehicle, was later located and arrested by WYP. He received medical attention while in custody.

"IOPC investigators attended the scene and the police post-incident procedures, where we obtained initial accounts from the officers and staff involved."

West Yorkshire Police said earlier today that two people have been arrested.

A 21-year-old man has been detained on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, while a 26-year-old has been arrested in connection with the crash.

Both remain in police custody at this time.

Police are continuing to appeal for information in relation to the crash.

Officers would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash, the vehicle prior to it, or who has dash cam footage.
