A MAN has been fined after failing to produce a valid train ticket for a journey between Bradford and Blackburn.

Asif Sayal, 21, of Brookdale Road, Liverpool, faced a charge of failing to produce/deliver a rail ticket on request/give name and address.

On a journey between Bradford Interchange and Blackburn, on July 20, 2022, Sayal boarded a train without a valid ticket to travel or a promise to pay notice.

He made a journey from Bradford Interchange to Blackburn and got on with an out-of-date ticket for the previous day from Leeds and stated that he thought he could have used it on his day of travel because the train was cancelled.

His details were obtained and a letter was sent to Sayal requesting payment of the fare. As there was no response, a Fixed Penalty letter was then sent and the fare remains unpaid. The train fare avoided is £16.90.

Sayal was fined £220, ordered to pay £150 costs, £34 victim surcharge and £16.90 compensation, for a total of £474.90. A collection order was made by the court at the sentencing hearing.

The case was proved in a single justice procedure hearing at Preston Magistrates’ Court on October 6, 2022.
