LATEST NEWS: Bradford boys nominated for prestigious BRIT Award
IT has been a bumper 2022 for Bradford’s Bad Boy Chiller Crew as they continued their rise in the music industry.
BBCC – comprised of Kane Welsh, Clive (real name, Sam Robinson) and Gareth Kelly (better known as GK) – are arguably the city’s biggest export in recent times.
The Bradford lads burst onto the scene during the Covid-19 pandemic, in 2020, with the release of “450” in July that year – a bassline track with Kane leading the way on vocals, supported by MCing from Clive and GK.
It is a sound – wobbly bassline with carefree lyrics about their antics – that has become synonymous with BBCC but this year they have evolved into an act that hits into the UK charts too, with nearly 1.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
"BMW" is perhaps the biggest hit of the year for the group, with more than 32 million listens on the original track on Spotify and peaking at seven in the Official Charts.
The year began with a bang as the boys embarked on a mini-tour to launch their new, and only second, album “Disrespectful” and they have squeezed a lot in, in just 365 days.
They played to an intimate, but bustling, crowd at The Wardrobe, in Leeds in early February as part of that, giving their passionate fans a flavour of what was to come from BBCC.
GK made a bold claim too when The Telegraph & Argus sat down with him for an exclusive interview just before that gig.
He said BBCC wanted to become The Beatles and rockstars of the new world.
They certainly were on the right track when Disrespectful – released on February 18 - rocked to Number 2 in the Official Album Chart on February 25, beating Adele and just losing out to Ed Sheeran.
BBCC then went on tour in the UK across April and May, before heading to the USA for three gigs – starting in New York, then San Francisco, finishing in Los Angeles.
They also played alongside the Artic Monkeys, Gorillaz and Calvin Harris in Los Angeles at Life Is Beautiful Festival.
BBCC were once again set to appear at Leeds and Reading Festivals, in August for the second year in a row – this time, on the main stage.
But their set was cut short in Leeds, with a reported altercation on stage and they were replaced by Digga D at Reading.
The Bradford boys also played Parklife and at Ibiza Rocks over summer before releasing a whacky song to help fans cheer on England at the World Cup in Qatar, called "Jurgen Kropper".
BBCC even linked up with a famous face from their childhood – Dappy, of N-Dubz and individual fame – on an alternative version of their new track "When It Rains, It Pours".
Other top tunes in 2022 from the lads were "Skank All Night (You Wot, You Wot)" and "Renegade".
BBCC will hope 2023 is another year to remember and will look forward to touring again – taking in the likes of Leeds, Manchester and Edinburgh - for their new album "Influential" which will launch early next year.
