A WEST YORKSHIRE YouTuber who has become a creative success story for the area has spoken with the mayor about pursuing a career in YouTube.

Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, met with Yasmin Uddin, creator of the successful YouTube channel Yammy, in Bradford to discuss access to the creative industries and first hand Yammy’s work creating content on the platform for millions of subscribers.

The Mayor and Yasmin met at The Impact Hub, a home for social innovation and enterprise in the heart of Bradford’s historic Little Germany district, along with its CEO Mohammed Kamran and YouTube’s Head of Public Policy UK&I, Iain Bundred.

Yammy, from Leeds, is one of many YouTube creators who live and work in their home town or city and has become a creative success story with a global reach – using the platform to build diverse, creative businesses, spanning the worlds of music, sports, education, technology, and more.

Yasmin has become one of the most popular and visible gamers online, acting as an advocate for women in gaming and campaigning for industry equality across her platforms.

She said:“I originally wanted to be a journalist and had a place at university to study early years teaching, but when I sat down with my mum to discuss my options she told me YouTube is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity so I decided to go for it. Now I can’t imagine not being a YouTuber and have never looked back.”

Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, said:“Everyone should be able to build a successful career in the creative industries – no matter what their background is.

“Not only does supporting the creative industries help people like Yasmin scale up their fantastic ideas, but it also boosts our local economy and means that we can bring even more skills, training and job opportunities to West Yorkshire.”

YouTube UK&I Head of Public Policy Iain Bundred said: “The creative industries should be available to everyone regardless of their location or background.

"YouTube makes it possible for anyone to become a creator and Yammy is a great example - from Leeds, she followed her passion and is now part of YouTube’s creative ecosystem that contributed more than £1.4bn to the UK’s GDP in 2021 and supports over 40,000 jobs in the UK”.
