BRADFORD police presented awards to more than 30 officers, staff and members of the public for their bravery and outstanding service, including a woman who helped residents displaced in a siege at Greengates.
The District Commanders awards were presented by Bradford district police commander, chief superintendent Rob McCoubrey, to recipients in relation to events that happened in 2022.
Member of the public Sandra Baldwin assisted the police during a siege on New Line Road at Greengates in February, taking in displaced vulnerable residents and then feeding and looking after them while the policing operation concluded.
A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "She went above and beyond in supporting the police operation, she took in neighbours and kept them fed and watered throughout the incident."
PC Josh White, who was off duty, and member of the public Naomi Jones received the award for putting themselves in harm's way to apprehend two males armed with a weapon in Pudsey in April. They both were assaulted and suffered injuries. The males were arrested when police arrived.
Other recognised were:
- Officers from the Bradford District Domestic Abuse Team for their efforts in protecting vulnerable victims an pursuing perpetrators of domestic abuse.
- Officers from Bradford Patrol Team 5 for dealing with an extremely violent male, securing evidence required to aid a successful prosecution.
- PC Nigel Eaton for his leadership, hard work and proactivity in running a high-performing wanted person team, bringing hundreds of offenders into custody to answer for their crimes.
- PS Matt Donohoe for outstanding partnership working within the Youth Justice Service.
- PC Laura Martin and PC Temour Ahmed for bravery off duty when faced with a suicidal male. Their timely actions prevented the male from taking his own life.
- DC Andy Cullingford for his determination, enthusiasm and ongoing commitment to tackling serious and complex criminality.
Chief Superintendent McCoubrey said: “It's a real privilege to work with such fantastic officers, staff and volunteers across Bradford district, they do amazing work every day to keep people safe.
“Some of the stories heard are of ordinary people going above and beyond in order to protect the public, both on and off duty.
“I see first-hand the challenges my colleagues face on a daily basis, at a time when demands on public services are extremely high.
“All those involved in policing Bradford district work tirelessly to make Bradford a safer place to live, work and visit. I am proud of their commitment and the work they do in support of local communities.
“It's also incredibly uplifting to recognise members of the public when they step forward and act in a public-spirited way, helping the police and doing the right thing by their fellow citizens."
