Increased stop and search powers are being kept in place in part of Leeds for a further 24 hours to prevent serious violence and keep communities safe following an incident yesterday.

Senior officers in Leeds have authorised the continued use of Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 to detect and deter the carrying of offensive weapons in east Leeds, following an incident in which a man was stabbed and seriously injured outside The Springs shopping centre.

He is continuing to receive treatment in hospital for injuries that are not considered life threatening. Another man who was injured has been treated and released from hospital.

Detectives from Leeds District CID are continuing to carry out enquiries into the incident.

Section 60 gives police officers the power to search people or vehicles for offensive weapons or dangerous instruments without them having to have their usual grounds to suspect each person searched.

The temporary order covers an area of east Leeds including Harehills, East End Park, Whinmoor, Gipton, Temple Newsam Park and Colton. (see map)

The area covered by increased stop and search powers under Section 60

It originally came into effect at 5pm on Friday for an initial 24 hours and has now been extended for a further 24 hours until 5pm tomorrow.

It follows a detailed assessment of the need for continued use of the additional powers to prevent any further serious violence and help to keep communities safe.

Maintaining the trust and confidence of the community is vital and we are continuing to liaise with key community representatives, including the district's Independent Advisory Group, to ensure appropriate scrutiny and accountability around the use of this additional power.
