CITY expect to find out today whether their trip to Gillingham can survive the sub-zero weather.

Several League Two games scheduled for this weekend have fallen victim to the sudden cold snap.

Gillingham beat Dagenham 3-2 in their FA Cup second-round replay at the Priestfield Stadium on Thursday night.

The covers were immediately put back on the pitch but the Kent club have no undersoil heating. With last night’s temperature expected to drop to minus three locally, there are fears about whether tomorrow lunchtime’s clash with City will be on.

Mark Hughes said: “A number of games have already been called off, so hopefully they’ll give us a little bit of a heads up.

“We’ve clearly got a lot of fans going down there and, ideally, we get an early shout on that.

“We’ll have to see what happened overnight. The pitch looked quite firm watching the FA Cup game on TV.

“That result may well have boosted their confidence going into our game. We’ll have to see whether or not it’s on.

“It will obviously be dependent on them. It’s their home game and I’m sure they are doing the best they can to get it on.

“I would imagine it’s in their interest, although they might think that having played Thursday they don’t want to play Sunday.

“Whether or not we play will be down to the weather rather than anything else.”

City plan to train at Valley Parade this morning before setting off south. Romoney Crichlow is set to join in and Hughes will then make a call whether to include the centre half in the travelling squad following his calf injury.

“Rom hasn’t been out on the grass with us yet but he’s feeling good,” added the City boss.

“We didn’t train on the grass yesterday because of the frost so went on the 4g (artificial pitch). It wasn’t really advisable for him to join in for his first session back with the group.

“He’ll train at the stadium today and we’ll see how he is. It might be a little bit early.”

Hughes also confirmed there is a doubt with winger Tyreik Wright.

“We’re struggling with Tyreik. He just felt a little bit of an issue with his calf.

“Soleus injuries are quite notorious so we’ve got to be mindful of that.

“But he’s quite positive and it might be just the way the pitches are at the moment and how they change. One day they are hard, the next soft and that can compromise you.”

The Bantams need to pick themselves up after the successive defeats against Northampton and Leyton Orient saw them slip to sixth spot.

After Gillingham, they are also set to face fellow strugglers Rochdale and Harrogate in the next couple of weeks. It represents a big chance to get back into the mix.

Hughes said: “We’d like to think so but that only happens if we do the right things and are able to capitalise on good periods during a game.

“I sense because of the disappointment in recent weeks we’re at a point now where we’re really determined to turn those results round. I expect to see that tomorrow.

“We’ve frustrated and disappointed ourselves and that can’t continue for any length of time. It’s clearly an opportunity for us to get back on winning terms again.”
