A BRADFORD school was shown international support after appearing on national TV.

Dixons Marchbank Academy was featured in a BBC Breakfast News report exploring the struggles families who do not qualify for free school meals are facing in the current cost of living crisis.

The report spoke to teachers, students and one family about this hardship. It showed the stark reality for many families today who can barely cover the cost of their children’s school meals, and as a result, struggle to provide nutritional and balanced meals due to rising costs.

In response to the TV feature, Dixons Marchbank was inundated with an outpouring of global support, with donations being offered to support the student featured on the news and others like her.

Helen Haunch, Dixons Marchbank Academy principal, said: “We were hoping that the exposure might raise awareness of the struggle some people are facing currently.

"However, what we didn’t expect was the absolute outpouring of support from people all over the UK and as far afield as Kuwait and Switzerland.

“People have begun making donations to support our families directly and also our breakfast club. We have heard so many touching stories from donors who wanted to give back to their communities; we have been so moved by people’s generosity.”
