Horton Grange Primary School has formed a ‘Junior Road Safety Team’ who have been working with the police and local councillor Aneela Ahmed out in the local community.

The road safety group was formed following discussions with Year Six pupils who want to contribute to their local area and be active citizens.

Headteacher Rebecca Marshall said: “I am immensely proud of the children at Horton Grange for being so proactive and setting an outstanding example to their peers and members of the community.

“We teach the children about road safety as part of our broad and balanced curriculum, and it was great to see the children put this into action. The children had a real sense of pride in their community work today and are already talking about when their next event will be!”

Councillor Aneela Ahmed said, “It is fantastic that the children want to be involved in keeping our local community safe.

“The roads surrounding the school can be very busy, with members of the public driving at high speeds or parking illegally. It is vitally important that the profile of road safety is raised, particularly around a primary school and that the children have a voice in what happens in their local area.”

The school, part of Exceed Academies Trust, and its Junior Road Safety Team are keen to build on the success of the event and will be organising further events in collaboration with the police, local councillors and community going forward.
