A COUNCILLOR has said a shooting in his area is "shocking" and "disturbing".
Detectives from West Yorkshire Police are investigating after a gun was fired at a house in Pyenot Hall Lane, in Cleckheaton at around 3.30pm yesterday.
A group of males in dark clothing and balaclavas approached the property and made threats.
The occupants then heard a loud bang before the men dispersed.
Police rushed to the scene and found damage to the front door which was consistent with a firearm having been discharged.
Councillor Andrew Pinnock (Lib Dem, Cleckheaton) was not aware of the incident but was shocked that a shooting has happened in the ward.
He said: “The local police inspector has not got in touch with us.
“Police do do that if something has happened but it’s quite possible I won’t find that out until later in the day.”
He added: “I’m shocked that this could happen, bearing in mind these sorts of things can happen more or less anywhere.
“We had a case some years ago in a very nice neighbourhood where police found evidence of bombs.
“I don’t think it came to anything, you just don’t know what to expect sometimes and quite clearly there are groups of people around who have no regard for other people, discharging firearms, whether legally or not, because obviously I don’t know if they are legally held or not, I can’t comment on that.”
The Telegraph & Argus visited the street today and saw what looked to be pellet damage to the door.
A police scene is still in place at the property, with officers conducting extensive investigations.
Police have arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with the incident and he is in police custody.
Cllr Pinnock said: “It’s got to be shocking, because most people round here will not have any knowledge of things like that and that’s quite disturbing.
“The only thing I can hope is it’s an isolated incident and we know how these things can happen, people get the wrong end of the stick, go at somebody and discover after it was a complete mistake.
“There’s been a lot of incidents of that sort over the years
“One hopes this is not evidence of something worse.”
He added: “One has to hope it’s an isolated incident that has very little to do with anybody else within the area.
“As I say, it is quite possible because this sort of thing has happened in the past that people get the wrong house for whatever reason.
“But without knowing which house it was and who lives there and who lives next door and so on, I can’t say too much because unless police take us into their confidence, which they can do.”
The Homicide and Major Enquiry Team (HMET) are appealing for witnesses and would like to speak to anyone that might have information that could help their investigation.
Cllr Pinnock has urged members of the public to get in touch with police, if they can assist.
He said: “One thing I would say is, if anybody locally has suspicions, that they report them to the police
“I think police are always saying this, they would far rather you report something that is 'nothing' in inverted commas, than not.”
