LUCKY Bradford College student Ciaran Keaney was selected to “shoutcast” a professional Esports tournament in collaboration with Legend Gaming and College sports partner, Bradford Bulls.
Legend Gaming reached out to Work Placement Officer Katie Gore with an incredible opportunity - for a Bradford College student to host and commentate on a play-by-play livestream of the online games tournament.
Katie said: “As part of my job role, I support students on various courses to look at work experience opportunities. John Armstrong from web and gaming said we could work together to provide projects for our students and asked if any of our students would like to take part in this event.”
Having a passion for shoutcasting and studying a Level 3 BTEC in Esports at Bradford College, Ciaran was put forward by his tutors - and he jumped at the chance.
Said Cairan: “I love gaming, and I’ve been doing it all my life. I was looking around and thought this (Esports programme] sounded like a good course. It leads to a lot of things. So far, we’ve learnt different strategies from different games, and looked into actual pros and how they train themselves mentally and physically for tournaments.”
Ciaran hosted the multi-platform Fortnite tournament, commentating on gameplay in real-time with dozens of participants competing for the grand prize of an elite gaming chair.
Katie continued: “With Esports, there is a lot of stigma surrounding students just gaming, but there are so many opportunities. Being new to it myself, I researched different career pathways. For example, there is the health side to it, so you can go into being a nutritionist or a physiotherapist.
“We do have students who want to go down the pro-gamer route but then there are other students who want to go into marketing and business.
“The British Esports Federation do a lot of parent guides online. We are hoping over the academic year to host an event for parents so they can get a bit more of an understanding of what our Esports course is about to help with misconceptions.”
