TWO churches in Bradford have been awarded a total of £5,000 from the Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust to enable them to make repairs.
St John the Evangelist in Bierley will receive £4,000 and St James Church in Baildon will receive £1,000.
The Bierley church will use the funds to repair its clock which has not functioned for several years.
Robert Smith, treasurer at St John’s, said: “We were delighted to receive the YHCT’s help. The grant will help with the restoration of the Potts turret clock which has been stopped for a number of years.
“This has been missed by the local community and drivers of the tens of thousands of vehicles that pass by the building each day.”
Funding for the Baildon church will go towards the cost of replacing the white timber cladding on the base of the steeple, which is now suffering from wet rot.
The church itself is constructed entirely from wood and painted white, having been first constructed in Essex in 1892, before being carefully dismantled in 1902 and transported by traction engine to Baildon, where it was re-assembled in its current location.
Tom Ramsden, chairman of the YHCT said: “Our latest grant awards support a wide variety of churches and projects.”
“The grants are made possible thanks to the generosity of our Friends and donors.”
