A BRADFORD district town will be dealt a retail blow this weekend when a major shop closes for good.
Wilko will officially close its Shipley store to customers on Saturday, November 26.
A poster on the shop’s front window says: ‘Saying goodbye is never easy’ and re-directs customers to its nearest stores in Bradford, Birstall and Armley.
The retailer’s site on Kirkgate will shut after following an announcement back in January that its store in Shipley would close its doors. The closure is a blow for the town, particularly as it occupies a prominent unit on Kirkgate.
The store was originally due to close in February, but the date was pushed back to November.
A petition was set up to save the store, with Shipley MP Philip Davies, Green Party councillors and Shipley Town Council all calling on Wilko bosses to reconsider their decision.
It follows news of NatWest shutting its doors for the final time to customers at its Market Street branch in Shipley on February 23, 2023.
Mike Connors, Shipley Town Council chairman, said: “People have had time to digest the news about the closure of Wilko.
"It’s a major spot going in Shipley. I’m more concerned about the bank closure now.”
