A BRADFORD care home is 'inadequate' and in special measures following a visit by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
The health and social care watchdog visited Ashcroft Nursing Home on Church Street, Cleckheaton, on September 23 and 27, 2022.
The care home, which supports people with a range of needs including those living with dementia, was given an overall ‘inadequate’ rating.
The home was also rated ‘inadequate’ for safety, leadership and responsiveness as well as ‘requires improvement’ for effectiveness and the inspection question, ‘is the service caring?’.
It marked a drop from the home’s previous ‘good’ rating.
But a spokesman for the care home said it takes the report’s findings “extremely seriously”.
The CQC’s report said: “Care staff worked hard to try to meet people's needs and they were kind and caring in their approach. Activities were not offered in ways which were meaningful to people and some people were not appropriately stimulated.
“Records of people's care and support were not always completed or known by staff, to ensure the care people received met their needs.”
The report listed several concerns around staffing levels.
The report said: “People's relatives said they thought their loved ones were safe and well cared for overall. They trusted the staff, although expressed concerns about staffing levels.
“There was a lack of care for people's teeth and mouths. People had toothbrushes but it was evident these had not been used for cleaning their teeth. For example, several toothbrushes we saw were dry and ingrained with dirt, debris and hairs.
“People's personal appearance was considered and they were supported to be suitably dressed. However, there was a lack of attention given to people's continence needs due to compromised staffing levels. As a result, some people were incontinent before staff were able to support them.”
The care home will be kept under review and reinspected within six months.
In a statement, manager Ashraf Patel said: “We take the CQC findings extremely seriously and have taken robust and positive steps to strengthen our risk management and governance systems to ensure our residents receive quality, safe and compassionate care at all times.
“We continue to work pro-actively with our regulators and local authority and have developed a detailed action plan which has been implemented to ensure a sustainable improvement to the home.
“This has resulted in our residents and families being positive about staff who care for them and their day to day experience at the home. Staff feedback have been complementary about the management team who continue to have a hands on approach on a day to day basis.”
