FIRE crews from across West Yorkshire were called to the scene of a huge fire at a Post Office in West Bowling on Monday evening.

Post Office has now confirmed the Gaythorne Road branch will be closed for several weeks due to extensive damage caused by a fire.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 10:50 pm and remained at the scene overnight to extinguish the fire.

Crews from across West Yorkshire, including most Bradford stations, Leeds and Huddersfield attended the scene.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Seven to eight fire engines were there.

"Crews from across Bradford, Leeds and Huddersfield were at the fire and crews are still there now.”

After an investigation led by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, the fire has been ruled as non-suspicious.

Paramedics and police were also called to the road, but no injuries or casualties have been reported.

Gathorne Road was closed by police as firefighters attended to the scene.

The fire was on the ground floor of the three-story end terrace, covering 15 meters by 15 meters.

Six pumps and one aerial were used to put out the fire.

Six breathing apparatuses were used, three large jets, one hose reel, and high-powered fans were used to extinguish the fire.

The incident also required the cooperation of Yorkshire Water, Northern Powergrid, and Bradford Council to assist crews.

A Spokesperson for Post Office said: “We’re very sorry to confirm that a fire at West Bowling Post Office has resulted in extensive damage.

“We are in close contact with the Postmaster that operates the branch which is likely to be closed for several weeks.

“In the meantime, alternative nearby Post Offices are Holme Top which is a short walk away and opens six days a week, and Wibsey Bank Foot which is also open six days a week.”

Councillor Talat Sajawal of the Little Horton ward said: “It’s devastating for the whole community.

“The Post Office was at the heart of this community and very well used.

“There is another Post Office on Manchester Road which people will probably be turning to but it will have a huge impact on locals.

“I’m glad that there have been no causalities as the flat upstairs was being renovated so it was empty.

“It must be devastating for the owner and the people who work at the Post Office."
