The Christmas lights switch-on in Birkenshaw this weekend is set to pay tribute to a much-loved boy who died suddenly.

The family of eight-year-old Jasper Cook were left devastated when he tragically died without warning in January.

But a special light, designed by one of Jasper’s school friends, Henry, will be unveiled at Sunday’s annual Christmas lights switch-on.

The touching tribute was made possible by Birkenshaw CE Primary School and the Birkenshaw Village Association.

It has been described as a “beautiful reminder” by Jasper’s mum Kim.

Christmas was her son’s favourite time of the year, she revealed.

She said: “We have been devastated by the loss of our beloved Jasper and are truly honoured & overwhelmed by the support we have had from everyone locally.

“We are so touched by the thoughtfulness of the school & the Birkenshaw Village Association to dedicate this year's Christmas light to our darling Jasper.

“The designs put forward by all of the children were all wonderful and we are thrilled that one of Jasper's friends won the 'Design a Light' competition.

“This light will be displayed forever at Jasper's favourite time of year and serve as a beautiful reminder of him.

“It is wonderful to live in a community that cares so much about one of their own. We are so thankful that Jasper will never be forgotten.”

Birkenshaw Christmas Fair and Light Switch will take place between 2pm and 5pm on Sunday, November 20.

The lights will be switched by Henry and the Cook family at half past four.
