WEST End and Broadway musical phenomenon Wicked is flying to the Alhambra theatre, the T&A exclusively reveals.
The spectacular smash hit show - a Witches of Oz origin story - returns to Bradford in 2024, with tickets going on sale in the new year.
Described as “one of the most successful musicals of all time”, Wicked is a beguiling backstory to the lives of L Frank Baum’s characters from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the inspiration for beloved 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland. Wicked is the story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two young women who first meet as sorcery students at Shiz University - blonde and popular Glinda and a misunderstood green girl named Elphaba.
Following an encounter with The Wizard, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda’s unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power while Elphaba’s determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences for her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
Wicked was a huge hit when it came to the Alhambra in 2016, selling more than 50,000 tickets.
Michael McCabe, Executive Producer (UK & Ireland) of Wicked, said: “We are proud to be bringing Wicked back to the magnificent Alhambra Theatre, where incredible audiences greeted us during its previous sold-out engagement. We’re excited to have this opportunity to share once again the spectacle, magic and emotion that has created unforgettable memories for audiences around the world.”
Bradford Theatres general manager Adam Renton said: “Hosting the international blockbuster Wicked in 2024 is another magnificent milestone in the Alhambra’s history and I’m thrilled to welcome this incredible musical back. We’re looking forward to welcoming the widest audience possible to enjoy this spectacle.”
Wicked continues its open-ended run at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre, where it has been seen by more than 11 million people and is now in its 17th year. The show has won over 100 awards, including three Tonys, two Oliviers and a Grammy, and has been seen by more than 60 million people worldwide. Next year is the 20th anniversary of its Broadway premiere.
Wicked features 350 costumes, 140 wigs, 244 pairs of shoes, 110 hats, 125 pairs of gloves and 30 prosthetic masks. With a touring company of 80 and 20 additional staff in each city, it takes 100 people to deliver performances of the production.
* Wicked is at the Alhambra from April 16 to May 19, 2024. Tickets will be on sale to Bradford Theatres Friends Members on January 23, 2023 and to the general public on January 30, 2023. Visit bradford-theatres.co.uk
