A 53-YEAR-old man who assaulted a police officer has been jailed.
Gurjit Singh Shergill, 53, of Wadsworth Court, Cleckheaton, admitted common assault of an emergency worker, when he appeared before Kirklees Magistrates’ Court on November 10.
The incident took place on March 11, 2022, in Cleckheaton, where he was said to have assaulted a female police officer.
He was jailed for 12 weeks in total and ordered to pay £130 in compensation.
Court documents show that while there were no physical injuries to the police officer, the psychological impact was significant.
When sentencing, magistrates took into account the fact that the offence was upon an emergency worker acting in the execution of her duty.
A charge of threatening to kill the officer, which Shergill had pleaded not guilty to, was dismissed.
