Idle Co-op forced to close today due to 'abusive behaviour'

West Yorkshire Police was called to the shop off Bradford Road, in Idle at around 12.45pm.

It was to reports of an ongoing public disorder where a man was shouting at staff.

Police confirmed an investigation has begun.

The Co-op store was closed, with the shutters down when The Telegraph & Argus visited just before 4pm.

Some members of the public at the scene said they had spotted a police car at the store roughly 2pm and that it had been shut since then.

A spokesperson for the Coop said: “Our store in Bradford Road, Idle, closed temporarily this afternoon following anti-social and abusive behaviour towards our colleagues.

"Fortunately no one was physically hurt however, facing this behaviour should not be part of the job and Co-op has successfully campaigned for stricter sentences and greater protection for all shopworkers."

The lights were on in the store and a small amount of beer and soft drink cans were strewn on the floor near the window.

A number of people were turning up at the store to do their shopping when the T&A were there and the Co-op has confirmed it will reopen at 5pm. 

The spokesperson for the firm said: "The store is re-opening to serve the community this afternoon.”
