BUILDING work has begun on Bradford's first Greggs Drive-Thru but it will be some months before the new store opens.
The Council approved plans to build the new eatery in Rooley Lane last October and construction teams are now on site.
It replaces the former well-loved Cross Keys Pub, which was demolished in November 2021.
The new Greggs, which sits just beyond Rooley Lane's junction with Bowling Hall Road, will be the first of its kind in West Yorkshire.
It was set to be the chain's only drive-thru in the whole of Yorkshire when applicants 5aphire LTD had their plans approved but a Greggs store with that facility opened in December last year, at Meadowhall Retail Park, in Sheffield.
But the question now on every pastry-lover's lips will be when the Bradford store opens.
Workers have been on site for the past few months and a shell of the drive-thru is now visible.
But a spokesperson for Greggs revealed the new store will not be trading until 2023, with no specific details given on a date or even month for the grand opening.
They said: “Greggs is due to open a new drive-thru shop in Bradford in 2023. While we are unable to share any details at the moment, we will be sure to share further information in the coming months.”
The T&A was previously told the new Greggs would likely create between 20 and 25 jobs and be open from 6am to 10pm.
The Cross Keys Pub, which had a large car park area, was vacant at the time the planning proposals were accepted.
It had been beset by issues like fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour in the months prior to October 2021.
The application for the new Greggs said the pub had shut “long before the Pandemic” and that there was “no realistic prospect” that the drinking venue would re-open any time soon.
