BRADFORD clinicians are calling for young 'superhero' children volunteers to take part in a world-first ground-breaking study on whooping cough at Bradford Royal Infirmary.
This trial is evaluating a new vaccine for the prevention of pertussis – more commonly known as whooping cough, a childhood disease which affects the lungs and breathing tubes.
The study is being run in the UK and Australia, and Bradford is one of just 12 centres across the UK with around 600 children being recruited countrywide.
Consultant paediatrician Dr Anil Shenoy, who is leading the research team, said: “This is an important trial for the Trust and for Bradford, and we are proud to be taking part in a world-first clinical trial. We have recruited some participants but we have changed the age criteria so are looking for more.
“We are looking to recruit children and young people aged from six to 17. We’re calling them ‘superheroes’ as they will be ‘Standing up to pertussis.’ We are working with local schools and GP surgeries as well using the Born in Bradford (BiB) registry in order to recruit participants.”
Dr Shenoy added that the vaccine is administered via a less invasive nasal spray.
