A NEW Costa store has opened in a supermarket car park and created 15 jobs.
The drive-thru coffee shop in Enterprise 5 Retail Park, at Five Lane Ends in Idle officially launched last Friday.
It brings to fruition a planning application that was approved last October by Bradford Council.
The proposal was put forward by supermarket giant Morrisons which is the main business in the retail park, with a large supermarket there.
The new store has taken 167 square metres of the car park – with around 73 parking spots lost - towards the top-end, near the McDonald’s restaurant.
Morrisons said in its application that the Costa would “rejuvenate” a section of the site that is currently only used for parking.
A spokesperson for Costa Coffee confirmed the new store has created 15 jobs and will be open for 15 hours each day, with different opening and closing times at the weekend.
The spokesperson said: “We’re delighted to confirm that a brand-new Costa Coffee Drive-Thru store opened in Idle, Bradford.
“The store has created 15 jobs for members of the local community and is open for customers to grab a perfectly crafted Costa coffee from 6am to 9pm Monday to Saturday and 7am to 8pm on Sundays.
“We look forward to continuing to welcome customers to the new store.”
There were nine objections to the plans from people living near the site.
They claimed neighbours already have to put up with issues of litter, traffic problems and the noise from cars.
A readers’ poll by The Telegraph & Argus in October last year showed 61 per cent of the 388 people who responded would not use a drive-thru Costa coffee in a supermarket car park.
But planning officers claimed the use of this area of the car park could in fact reduce anti-social behaviour on the site.
They said: “The proposed changes to facilitate this coffee shop and drive-thru will alter the site and is an intensification of the sites use, however it will remove an area of parking which has presented a nuisance to neighbours in the past, replacing this for a building and drive-thru lane.
“It is considered that there are some advantages to having a late night use operating in this area, including natural surveillance of the site, which is likely to deter anti-social behaviour and management of the site when other units may not be in use.”
