A MAN has been jailed for stealing alcohol from a convenience store in Bradford city centre.

Charanjit Singh, 52, of Cross Lane, Great Horton, Bradford, has been jailed for a total of 28 days for two theft from a shop offences.

In the first charge, he was committed to prison for 28 days for stealing alcohol, to the value of £22.20, from Sainsbury’s, Broadway, Bradford, on October 6, 2022.

The court deemed the offence so serious because the defendant has a ‘flagrant disregard’ for court orders, because he is a ‘persistent offender with a terrible record' of similar offences.

There was 'no other option but custodial sentence’, added the court papers. Singh was ordered to pay a £154 victim surcharge. A collection order was made by the court.

Singh was committed to prison for 28 days, to run consecutively, for stealing a bottle of cider, worth £2.30, from Tesco, Sunbridge Road, Bradford, on July 24, 2022.

Singh was given no separate penalty for a charge of using threatening/abusive/insulting words/behaviour to cause harassment/alarm/distress. This took place at Tesco, Sunbridge Road, on July 24, 2022.

He pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced at Bradford & Keighley Magistrates’ Court on October 7, 2022.
