EIGHT Bradford takeaways and pubs have been handed hygiene ratings of 1 in the past three months.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) keeps a record of hundreds of thousands of food businesses, which are given a hygiene rating from 0 to 5 depending on a number of factors.
Restaurants, pubs, takeaways and many other companies are visited by inspectors from the local authority, with hundreds carried out each day across the country.
More than 4,000 Bradford establishments are on the FSA’s website and eight in the past three months have been rated a 1 – meaning major improvement is necessary.
Each location is rated on how it presents on the day and is scored across three main categories.
This includes hygienic food handling, such as preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage.
The second category is cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building to enable good food hygiene, which includes having an appropriate layout, ventilation, handwashing facilities and pest control.
The final factor considered is the management of food safety, where inspectors see if there are systems or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat and staff know all about it.
Deli Box, in Heights Lane, received a 1 rating most recently in Bradford.
It was inspected on September 12 and deemed to need major improvement in the management of food safety.
The takeaway also must improve its hygienic food handling but the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building were found to be generally satisfactory.
A spokesperson for Deli Box said they were not happy with the rating and dissatisfied with the way the inspection was conducted and claim it was “overly harsh”.
They added that they were told to be re-examined and that they would get a 5 next time.
One of those rated a 1 was Six Acres Pub in Tong, which is famous for its Sunday dinners.
It was inspected on August 10 and got good for the first category but needed improvement in the second category and major improvement for the management of food safety.
Shai Grill, a takeaway in Great Horton Road, was inspected on July 27 and got the exact same ratings as Six Acres.
A spokesperson for the business said it has another review in a week or so and was given a low rating due to building work that was going on at the time.
The Golden Fleece, in Harden – another pub – was visited on August 4 and got improvement necessary in the first two categories and major improvement necessary in the last category.
Usmaan’s Takeaway, in Woodroyd Road, was visited on July 26 and received a rating of generally satisfactory for the first category, improvement necessary for the second and major improvement necessary for the second.
Meanwhile, Akhi’s, in Saffron Drive – a brand-new takeaway – was inspected on July 21 and received the same ratings as Usmaan’s.
A spokesperson for the takeaway said he agrees with the rating but explained he was new to the industry and appreciates the inspectors coming because he would have “never known” otherwise.
He added that the low rating was for the structure work and not the takeaway’s food and hygiene, for example not having self-closing hinges on some doors in the back.
The spokesperson also showed The Telegraph & Argus a document which outlined the premises had been visited since and all legal requirements and priority actions had been completed to a suitable standard.
Nadeem Savoury Hut, in Carlisle Place was visited on July 21 and got improvement necessary in the first category, generally satisfactory in the second and major improvement necessary in the third.
Fisherman’s Inn, in Wagon Lane got the exact same ratings when it was inspected on June 2022.
A spokesperson for the pub claimed on Thursday they were waiting for another visit that day or on Friday and said the initial inspection was when they first took over the business and “didn’t have any clue what was happening or what needed doing.”
Nadeem Savoury Hut did not provide a comment to The Telegraph & Argus, while Usmaan’s Takeaway had no contact number.
Six Acres did not respond in time.
The Golden Fleece refused to comment.
