An Indian bistro has proved so popular with Bradford customers that it's expanding - just four months after it first opened.
Kun – an Indian halal bistro and grill found on Wilton Street, off Morley Street – won over foodies following its launch in June.
Muhammad Shaqil, who worked as a chef for 34 years, and his wife, Vahida Iqbal, opened the restaurant after relocating to the city from Scotland.
Inspired by freshly cooked curries served by hotels in India, the menu features anything from the classic Karahi, Jalfrezi and Rogan Josh to grill-style meals, cooked by an award-winning chef.
Muhammad previously told the T&A that food is inspired by Indian grill and Asian fusion dishes, drawing from many Moroccan and middle eastern recipes.
Some of the restaurant’s latest reviews describe Kun as an “authentic new taste in Bradford” and a “hidden gem”.
Now the owners are celebrating the opening of a new floor.
He said: “We’ve had a lot of reviews, people are very happy with their food.
“Hopefully things carry on going and going.
“We’ve got Christmas coming up now, we want to fill the restaurant.
“We’re now going to be introducing our Christmas menu.”
Describing the décor, he said: “It’s basically the same kind of design. It’s a little bit more homely. That’s the kind of thing we’re getting from customers. Customers feel very comfortable when they come in.”
Next on the owners’ agenda will be improving their food hygiene rating.
The Food Standards Agency’s first inspection saw Kun rated one star.
When asked about the score, Muhammad said: “The problem was I haven’t run a kitchen myself for the last 12 to 15 years and at that time the system used to be different.
“It was unfortunate.
“We’ve put a proper system in place.”
Muhammad has introduced a 15 per cent discount amid the cost of living crisis.
“It’s not just businesses that are struggling, it’s households as well,” he said.
“So if I can offer a bit of a discount with the cost of living, inflation going up, if we can offer 15 per cent discount, it would help our customers.”
Muhammed has won several awards as a chef, as well as working as a personal chef for Bollywood stars during filming in the UK and launching restaurants around the world.
Speaking to the T&A in June, Muhammad said: “We use fresh Aberdeen Angus steak and the curries just aren’t like what you find anywhere else.”
