A FLEEING driver’s BMW flew through the air into a Tesco car park flattening a Mini Cooper and damaging two other vehicles, Bradford Crown Court heard.
The silver car swerved when running a red light, flipped and became airborne.
It flew through trees and bushes to land on the car park at Tesco at The Peel Centre, Valley Road, Bradford, shortly before 11pm on June 25.
Prosecutor Syam Soni told the court it completely crushed the Mini Cooper before coming to a stop in front of the supermarket doors.
“It was carnage,” Mr Soni told Judge Jonathan Gibson. “If anyone had been in the car, Your Honour can well imagine the outcome.”
Junaid Ahmed, 26, of Midland Road, Frizinghall, Bradford, was jailed for 14 months after pleading guilty to aggravated vehicle taking, with dangerous driving; driving uninsured and unlicensed; and possession of cannabis.
He is now on prison recall in HMP Leeds after being jailed for ten years for robbery in 2017, the court was told.
Mr Soni said the BMW, belonging to a relative of Ahmed, was taken without his consent.
It sped off from the police on Edderthorpe Street and accelerated away down Leeds Road. It ran three red lights and was swerving in and out of traffic.
While attempting to jump another red light, Ahmed swerved, flipped the car and it flew on to the Tesco car park.
The police arrived to see him looking dazed and confused with no footwear. The woman owner of the Mini Cooper was left feeling very shocked.
After his arrest, Ahmed told the police: “I’m happy no one was killed. I’m happy no one was hurt.”
He had seven previous convictions for 20 offences, including aggravated vehicle taking and taking without consent. He was recalled on licence for the robbery and had been in custody since June 28.
Tayo Dasaolu said in mitigation that Ahmed had shown genuine remorse and recog-nised that it was poor judgement on his behalf.
He had done courses in prison and was about to qualify as a rail engineer when he committed the offences.
He helped to care for his grandmother and had completed a victim awareness booklet while awaiting sentence.
Judge Gibson said Ahmed was in a police chase in Bradford with very bad pieces of driving, including ignoring red lights, before crashing into the Tesco car park.
He was banned from driving for two years and seven months.
