THE new series of the Great British Bake Off continued with Dessert Week for the remaining bakers.

The bakers had to tackle a signature of making eight individual steamed puddings, a technical of making a lemon meringue pie and a mousse dessert with a surprise in the middle showstopper for their three challenges. Carole went home and Sandro was voted star baker in this week’s episode.

Here is Sandy Docherty’s verdict of week four’s episode, as she continues her weekly Telegraph & Argus column which will be online each Wednesday morning while the 10-week series is on.

On Dessert Week, Sandy says: “I’m loving the challenges.

“It whetted my appetite to make a steamed sponge pudding.

“I felt for poor Dawn with the lemon meringue pie. I understand totally where she was coming from as it is something you do with your eyes closed. It did not come off for her.

“I was trying to weigh up the showstopper. It is not something you make every day but for a birthday or celebration.

“You saw some beauties in the showstopper. Janusz is not being overzealous with certain types of flavours.

“I was absolutely delighted for Sandro. He was so delighted to be star baker. He is heading for a Paul Hollywood handshake. Sandro could go all of the way.

“We are seeing the runners and riders now. It was a good showstopper, but enough to save Carole.

“It was between Dawn and Carole.

“Carole has wobbled through the last three weeks really. She has been a bit up and down. It was her time.

“Dawn is a good baker. She represents an age group that sometimes doesn’t seem to be represented and how much we have to offer.

“It’s good that Dawn is on and lives to fight another day and shows the world what middle aged women can do.

“Carole was ready to go and she knew it. I’m really inspired by some of the challenges.”
