This photograph was taken on Thursday night and shows a pavement on Tong Street completely blocked by vehicles.

A councillor for the area has called for action to be taken and spoke of his disappointment that funding for improvements “never materialised”.

Councillor Matt Edwards (Greens, Tong) said: "Parking on the pavement in front of the shops on Tong Street is a massive problem that really needs dealing with.

"Pavement parking is lazy, inconsiderate and dangerous and I have had many lengthy conversations with the Highways Department about how we tackle this.

“There is ample legal parking very close so there is absolutely no excuse for parking here.

"It’s not only dangerous for pedestrians but cars mounting and dismounting the pavement really disrupt the flow of traffic along Tong Street and make congestion work.”

Cllr Edwards added: "I was let down by Bradford Council last year when we were promised funding for improvements that never materialised but Councillor Hickson and I are working on a few things to get this problem fixed once and for all."

In response, a spokesperson for Bradford Council spokesperson, said: “Sadly with regards to the Additional Restrictions Grant funding, demand for planters and street furniture was so high we were unable to secure as many as we would have liked due to national supply chain issues.

“We are working with local councillors on potential solutions for the area that will help prevent pavement parking and improve road safety and walking and cycling opportunities.

“We have also requested increased enforcement.”

They added: “Parking over pavements and obstructing pedestrians is at best inconsiderate, and at worst, downright dangerous.

“Pavement parking comes under ‘unnecessary obstruction of the highway’ and is enforced by the police locally.

“It’s simply unacceptable that pedestrians and particularly parents with pushchairs and disabled people are forced out into the road because someone can’t be bothered to park their car properly.

“We ask that drivers please be considerate by following the law and parking their vehicles within the spaces provided.”

The issue of pavement parking on Tong Street is mentioned within the Bradford South Localities Plan.

‘Developing strategies to tackle inconsiderate parking issues’ is listed as a priority, with things like street furniture, education and the enforcement of existing laws detailed as ways to remedy the problem.

It also suggests working with shop owners to suggest alternative safe parking, reporting vehicles to parking services/wardens as well as businesses playing their part in advising customers to park safely.
