A police search for the body of Moors Murders victim Keith Bennett appeared to have widened as it entered its sixth day - despite no human remains being found.

Forensics officers could still be seen combing for clues on Saddleworth Moor's rugged landscape today (Wednesday) as they hunt the final resting place of the 12-year-old.

A third blue tent was pictured on the moorland, off the A635 Isle of Skye road between Holmfirth and Greenfield, while areas of land were taped off.

Portable toilets have also been installed on the site and temporary traffic lights have been installed on a stretch of road coned off for police vehicles.

Cops acting on a tip off from an amateur sleuth began digging land last Friday around half a mile from the A635 between Greenfield, Gtr Manchester, and Holmfirth, West Yorks.

Author Russell Edwards claims he found a skull of a child aged around 12 while digging on the moorland.

It sparked fresh hope that Keith's family may finally be able to give him the burial his mum Winnie Johnson desperately craved before her death in 2012.

But the "meticulous" search has so far proved fruitless and Det Chief Insp Cheryl Hughes, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "No bones, fabric or items of interest were recovered from the soil.

"Further samples have been taken for analysis, but there is no visible evidence to suggest the presence of human remains."

The force said the soil samples obtained by Mr Edwards had been sent to "accredited experts for analysis", which is ongoing.

Keith was the third victim of notorious child killers Ian Brady and Myra Hindley.

He was last seen by his mum on June 16, 1964, after he left home in Longsight, Manchester, on his way to his gran's house nearby.

He was one of five youngsters Brady and Hindley murdered.

Pauline Reade, 16, John Kilbride, 12, and Lesley Ann Downey, 10, were all buried on Saddleworth Moor and their bodies later unearthed.

But the evil pair died died without revealing where Keith's body was buried.

His heartbroken mum Winnie died aged 78 having never discovered what happened to her son's body. She was buried with her son's NHS glasses.
