The British Muslim Women Forum raised more than £4,000 in a disaster appeal for Pakistan at the weekend.
Since mid-June, the floods have killed hundreds of people, damaged hundreds of thousands of homes leaving half a million people homeless, and spread waterborne diseases.
Meanwhile the climate-change induced disaster has caused £26 billion in damages to the country’s economy.
Joined by Bradford West MP Naz Shah, the women gathered for a fundraising brunch at Café Regal.
Attendees heard about the Labour MP’s experiences of Pakistan post-floods while Sofia Buncy MBE DL led a commonwealth-inspired tribute to the late monarch Queen Elizabeth II.
Cllr Sabiya Khan (Wibsey, Labour) said: “Naz Shah, who had recently visited the flood devasted areas, shared stories of hope and despair as people struggle to cope in challenging circumstances, without shelter and basic necessities of life we take for granted.
“The poetry recital and performance by Cllr Kauser Mukhtar entertained all following the brunch.”
All funds will go to the Midlands Doctors Association, supporting emergency aid to the affected areas in Sindh, one of the worst flood-hit areas in southern Pakistan.
It comes as Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s speech at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.
He is set to speak on damage caused by climate change related flooding in the country.
