An inspirational football team from Bradford are set to play in front of former England captain Terry Butcher this week.
Volunteers for The Orchard - a church and community centre which provides supported accommodation for up to 42 people – are playing in The Salvation Army’s annual football tournament on Thursday.
The Partnership Trophy, which is run by the organisation and its subsidiary, The Salvation Army Housing Association (SAHA), will bring together football teams from its Lifehouses hostels and SAHA services.
Refugees and survivors of modern slavery will also be taking part in the five-a-side tournament in Manchester.
Special guest Terry Butcher, who captained the England team in the 1990 World Cup and played in three FIFA World Cups, will be cheering on teams and sharing his top football tips.
Mr Butcher will also open up about his experiences of depression after losing his son to suicide.
Foday Janko, who runs football training sessions at The Orchard near Leeds Road, said: “There are often very complex reasons why people find themselves homeless so this tournament is a way for us to celebrate all that they have overcome, the journey they’re on, and the support they have.”
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola’s humanitarian charity, Guardiola Sala Foundation, is also backing the event.
