RESIDENTS of a Bradford district village have been urged to sign up to get creative this Christmas for an annual event.

The Saltaire Living Advent Calendar is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site’s favourite festive events which has been running since 2006.

Last year’s opening event saw a record 62 windows on display throughout December.

Organisers Saltaire Inspired are inviting Saltaire residents and businesses to get involved in this creative community event, and help the village celebrate the festive season in style.

For the 2022 event, organisers are looking for Saltaire residents who can commit to designing and lighting up a window during this December.

All are welcome to take part, both children and adults and novices and artists. Event organisers added that no experience is necessary.

Saltaire Inspired are also seeking a small number of residents to ‘host’ a window designed by one of their partners. Those who do not take part can take daily tours of the finished designs around Saltaire.

Fliers have been put through letterboxes of Saltaire homes urging people to sign up to take part.

Dan Breeze, Saltaire Inspired trustee and member of the Living Advent Calendar Committee, urged people to get as creative as they can and sign up to take part in the annual event.

He said: “This magical event sees a wonderful array of windows light daily up throughout December in the village, featuring festive scenes, quirky characters, local connections, personal stories, and plenty of festive humour.

“Anyone in the village is welcome to take part; we offer advice and tips to window creators, and it’s a great way of meeting people in the village and counting down to Christmas as a community.”

The much-loved festive event attracts thousands of followers on social media each December, with its quirky festive window designs in picturesque settings.

Some of last year’s contributors included Rydals Museum (formerly a Mill) in Sweden, who created a window for the third successive year, which opened in Ada Street. Their window design was a collaborative effort, created by the participants in their own 'Lysande fönster i Rydal' (’Brilliant/Illuminated/Shining windows in Rydal’) event.

Cactus Crew, a Youth Enterprise group run as part of Ignite Yorkshire, also presented a window in Ada Street. This group of teenagers based in Shipley look to heritage to create enterprising projects, products and services.
