Staff and residents at Britannia Care home in Girlington have experiencing mix emotions over recent weeks.

In the same week the death of Queen Elizabeth II was announced, Britannia Care director and founder Mr Chaudhry Inayat Khan celebrated his 80th birthday. As a result of the Queen’s death, aged 96, Mr Chaudhry Khan’s birthday celebration at Britannia Care, were pretty low key as residents and staff joined the rest of the country in mourning the Queen’s passing.

Having, throughout the summer, enthusiastically joined in celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, decorating the home with bunting and having celebratory parties and afternoon tea, Thursday, September 8ths announcement from Balmoral came as a “shock to the system”.

“All at Britannia Care, residents, staff and management, were and have been, understandably, very subdued,” said Mr Chaudhry Inayat Khan.

A small celebration to mark not only Mr Khan’s birthday, but his founding over 30 years ago of Britannia Care did take place at the home, and there was a small, family-only gathering at a local restaurant, too.

“I appreciate the kind words expressed by staff and residents to mark my birthday. It was very thoughtful and much appreciating, as we have been in a state of mourning since the announcement of September 8.

“Residents have been paying tribute to the late Queen in their own, individual way, and have been following events and the funeral on TV.”

Britannia Care manager Nina Butor was full of praise for the residents under her care, many of whom can remember the death of the Queen’s father, King George VI in 1952 and the coronation of Princess Elizabeth.

“While we mourn the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, our thoughts are with the royal family, especially King Charles and his sons William and Harry,” said Ms Butor.

As Britannia Care is a purpose -built facility Mr Chaudhry Khan was able to include in the design important elements essential to providing high quality care, such as lift access to all floors, and corridors wide enough to accommodate supportive aids, all of which ensures residents have a place they can call their own.
