Eddie Johnson is hoping to score his way to a new contract with City.

The 23-year-old was restored to his old striking role and got the winner in a 1-0 victory at home to Morecambe - his first goal since September.

Now Johnson is out to add to his tally after revealing he could be used in the same position for the remainder of the season.

"The manager's told me he wants me to have a few games up front until the end of the season to see what I'm like up there and hopefully earn another contract," he said.

"I've got my goal, which I'm delighted with, but I'm mostly delighted with the win."

Johnson, who joined the club as a striker but converted to midfield at the back end of last season, partnered Barry Conlon up front with Peter Thorne out due to a hip injury and Willy Topp set to have an operation on his thigh.

And the partnership proved successful, with Johnson saying: "I thought me and Baz worked quite well - him knocking the ball on, which he does really well, and me getting on the end of it, which I enjoy.

" I've not really played before with a big man up front that flicked it on. When Dean Windass was here he used to hold the ball up a bit more than Baz does - but it was good and hopefully we can continue that tomorrow (at home to Barnet)."

Former Manchester United man Johnson admitted he was pleased to be back in his old position.

"I'll play wherever the manager asks me but I enjoyed playing up front and obviously getting the goal was pleasing," he said.

"I think I enjoyed playing midfield at the start of the season but when I came back from my back injury, when I was out for ten weeks, I struggled with my form a bit in midfield.

"The manager's told me I've got to try and earn a new contract, which hopefully I can if I keep sticking the ball in the back of the net until the end of the season."

Meanwhile, manager Sammy McIlroy believes City transfer target Garry Thompson will be staying at Morecambe.

The Shrimps turned down a £10,000 bid from the Bantams for the winger in January but it is thought they may make another move for him in the summer when his contract runs out.

But Morecambe have offered Thompson a new deal and McIlroy said: "We're close to signing him. We've turned down bigger bids than Bradford's and we're very confident of signing him."

The player only lasted 36 minutes against City after fracturing his cheekbone in a challenge from Conlon.

McIlroy said: "I had a word with Conlon and he said it was accidental, so there you go, but he won't play again this season."
