A CAREERS fair focusing on roles in the health and social care sector will be taking place next month, as part of Bradford Skills Month.
It is the first year that the sector is participating in the programme, which aims to get young people across the district involved.
Amanda Stanford, chief nurse at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, said: “It is a vast industry with many roles and positions within the public and private care settings, where young people can start at entry level and, via study paths into professional roles, have a quality career and make a difference in people’s lives.”
The main event is the Health & Social Care Careers Fair which will take place at the University of Bradford on October 11.
The careers fair will provide young people from secondary school up to university level with the opportunity to learn about career options directly from employers.
Health professionals in attendance will range from apprentices to theatre staff, midwives, physiotherapists, and more.
The event will also showcase the wide range of skilled careers available within social care – from roles young people may be familiar with, such as care workers in care home and home care settings, to roles they may have less knowledge of, such as occupational therapists, social care nurses, activity co-ordinators and registered managers.
Staff at the event will be on hand with interactive demonstrations, such as practising on a resuscitation manikin and working on a laparoscopy simulator.
The careers fair will also host an apprenticeship panel, where local apprentices will answer questions about their experiences in the workforce and help young people decide on their next career move.
Ele Grimwood, occupational therapy team manager, said: “We hope to showcase at the fair how rewarding, challenging and exciting working as an occupational therapist can be!”
Tina Lafferty, programme director of the Inclusive Workforce team at Bradford Council, said: “It's important that we run events like this that connect our young people to our local employers.”
Other events will take place throughout the month, where young people can get hands-on experience and learn what it takes to succeed in the sector.
