A light aircraft had to make an emergency landing at Leeds Bradford Airport last night.

The privately owned aeroplane was flying from London to Liverpool when it began facing engine problems, West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue (WYFRS) said.

There were five people on board in total.

WYFRS sent out the night crew from Rawdon station to assist airport teams.

Some residents who live close to Leeds Bradford Airport could hear the plane circling in the skies around 11.30pm.

“I heard something circling last night,” one local told the Telegraph & Argus.

“It took quite a while before it went away.

“It sounded a bit unusual – sick, off key note to the engine.”

There were no injuries reported.

The plane is believed to be a Falcon 10 - a type of light business jet costing between $472,500 and $577,500 on average - which was travelling from Barcelona.

Fire crews left the pilot and passengers with Leeds Bradford Airport’s team and returned to base.

A spokesperson for LBA said: “LBA can confirm that on 5th September at 22:23 there was an incident with an incoming private aircraft with five people on board.

"The aircraft landed safely, with LBA staff and emergency services following all protocols.

"Normal operations resumed rapidly after the incident.”

Another plane, a Pilatus PC-12 NGX – which has a £4 million price tag – circled around Yeadon, Bramhope, Otley as part of a diversion.

"I thought it was quite interesting what was going on," one plane watcher said.
