NEARLY a half dozen engines were scrambled to a fire at a derelict school in Bradford last night.
A number of crews from the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service were called at 7.43pm on Saturday to the derelict Wapping Road School on Prospect Road, Bradford.
Engines from Shipley, Bingley, Rawdon and Stanningley fire stations and an aerial appliance from Leeds attended.
A crew from Dewsbury assisted with aerial support and a watch commander from Cleckheaton organised approximately 30 firefighters at the scene.
Chris Wilson, crew commander from Rawdon Fire Station, said: "There was a lot of smoke and the fire was in the central area of the building.
"It was an old stone Victorian building that looked to have been derelict for some time.
"It was in a state of disrepair so we couldn't send our crews inside the building.
"There was also an issue with access as crews had to break in around the side because the property was fenced off."
