A DOUBLE-decker bus in a children's play area has been destroyed in an early-hours fire. 

Firefighters were called to The Valley Project, on Stirling Crescent, Holme Wood, at around 3.20am today.

Two hose reels, two breathing apparatus and a large jet were used to bring the blaze under control. 

Fire crews were at the scene for around two hours and police were also in attendance.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. 

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said the bus was destroyed in the fire, as well as a decking area and seating around it. 

The Valley Project aims to tackle inequalities and social isolation faced by children and young people growing up on the Holme Wood estate. 

The double-decker bus was donated to the project earlier this year.

The Valley Project wrote on its Facebook page back in May: "As many of you have now seen we have been generously donated a double-decker bus by First West Yorkshire, this will be transformed over the coming months into a multi-use indoor area.

"This is our biggest donation to date (both physically and financially) and we can't thank them enough, it will make such a difference to the project for many years to come.

"We would also like to thank Rance Booth Smith Architects who did all the paperwork to put our planning application in for the bus free of charge."
