PEOPLE have spoken of their shock after shots were fired on a Bradford estate in the early hours of the morning.

Police are now urging anyone with information about the incident, which happened at around 1.07am on Sunday outside a house on Dawnay Road, to get in touch.

Officers swooped on the Canterbury Estate following a third-party report of possible gunshots. They found evidence of a shooting and damage to the front of a property and a car. No one was reported to be injured.

The road has been sealed off for much of the day by a huge cordon and people living near the scene have spoken of their worry.

One woman, who didn’t want to be named, was visiting her elderly father when she was forced to take a different route because of the police scene.

She said: “You don’t expect it. You hear about it going on in other areas, but you don’t expect it on your own doorstep.

“I live about 20 minutes from here, so I couldn’t come down my usual route and I had to go around.”

The woman, and others, said there had been trouble earlier in the week.

Another woman, an expectant mum, said she was shocked to see the large police presence and added: “It’s worrying. This area, when I first moved in, I felt safe, it was nice people.”

She said she now doesn’t feel the same way.

Pat Burnett, who is in her seventies, lives close to the scene and said: “It’s scary, I heard a bang.

“I can’t see any sense in it all.”

She said her granddaughter, who is nearly 11, was staying with her and had been left scared.

Another woman said people are coming into the estate and “causing trouble”, while her friend added: “When you’ve got children, you don’t want someone shooting around houses.”

Councillor Talat Sajawal (Independent, Little Horton) said it was “very upsetting and very distressing” and urged anyone with information to contact the police.

Detective Inspector Guy Shackleton of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said:  “Police are carrying out a number of enquiries into this incident today and we are appealing for witnesses to what occurred.

“All firearms offences are treated extremely seriously and we can reassure residents a full investigation is ongoing into the circumstances of this incident.
