MORE than 170 drivers have been arrested in the first five days of a police drink and drug campaign.

West Yorkshire Police launched the focused scheme on Monday in an attempt to take intoxicated drivers off the road.

The Roads Policing Unit's (RPU) Twitter page has shared an update each day on how many arrests have been made.

Officers have arrested 171 drivers in total for drink and/or drug-driving offences, right across West Yorkshire in the first five days. This included 36 arrests in 24 hours between the fourth and fifth day.

Those people will lose their driving licences and could even see their jobs in jeopardy, according to the RPU.

The team's tweet said: "Day five of the drink/drug drive campaign sees a further 36 arrests in the last 24 hours. That brings the total so far to 171 arrests.

“We see the devastating consequences of what happens when people drive under the influence.

“It’s really not worth it #SaveALife #SaveYourOwn.”
