A family-friendly walking and cycling event will celebrate the new and improved Leeds Liverpool Canal towpath on September 10.

Work to improve a stretch of canal towpath between Apperley Bridge and Shipley began in March, and was recently completed.

The work was part of West Yorkshire Combined Authority's CityConnect programme, which spent £2.7 million on towpath improvements on this stretch and also a 4.3 kilometre section between Milnsbridge and Slaithwaite on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

Activities on the day will include cycling and walking activities, a Dr. Bike repair workshop, a led mountain bike ride for beginners, food and drink from Saltaire Brewery and live music.

The stretch of the towpath has been resurfaced and widened, making it an accessible and enjoyable route for people to walk, scoot and cycle.     The location for the event will be along the canal towpath close to the Saltaire Brewery in Shipley.

New bike store and ice cream cafe can be built on Apperley Bridge site

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, said: “The improvements to the towpath between Shipley and Apperley Bridge are part of our work to make cycling the natural choice for short journeys across the region.

.

“We must increase the use of cycling and greener modes of transport if we are to tackle the climate emergency and make West Yorkshire a cleaner place to live.”
