I’VE got a confession to make.
I’m 42 and I’ve never eaten a kebab before. I’ve had plenty of nights out and probably plenty of chances over the years, but never had one.
Even when my mates were chomping away in a kebab house, I was never tempted to join them, in a late-night snack. You’re probably thinking that’s a bit weird, but I’ve just never got round to it.
But fast forward to the here and now and I thought, why not?
It was no ordinary kebab that I opted to try first. I went for a bright pink and sweet one.
I made my way to German Doner Kebab with some nervousness about what I would be letting myself in for.
The Charles Street near The Broadway-based restaurant has launched Coco & Kiki, which are the UK’s first pink kebabs.
Served in fluffy pink coconut-infused waffle bread, the kebabs come in two different sizes (Coco and Kiki) and are combined with a regular kebab featuring doner meats, fresh lettuce, tomato, onion and red cabbage.
I opted for the larger of the two types; Coco. I had the choice of meats; chicken, beef or a mix of the two. It was chicken for me.
From the first bite I have to say it was very tasty. The chicken was beautifully cooked and the salad complements it brilliantly, with plenty of crunch along with the meat.
What some people might be put off by could be the sweet-flavoured, coconut waffle bread. It does mess with the mind a bit before and potentially play around with your senses, but it works. The sweetness of the coconut is not overbearing as feared, leaving the meat as the star of the kebab.
I also tried the pink kebab with yoghurt sauce but the Coco option, which is price £6.99, also comes with garlic and spicy sauce alternatives. A portion of chips and choice of soft drink are thrown in. The smaller-sized Kiki kebab is up for grabs for £3.
Saqib Gill, German Doner Kebab Bradford manager, says the brightly-coloured dishes are winning over diners since they launched last month.
He said: “It is a very offbeat idea.
“The idea of coconut, almond and pink colour might be a push for people. It’s a departure from the norm. The meats used in it are very good.”
I have to say despite never trying one before, I’m definitely a kebab covert now. Maybe I've persuaded you to try one.
