A fire chief in West Yorkshire has warned just how easily flames from disposable BBQs can spread.

Dave Walton, deputy chief fire officer (DCFO) for West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, shared an eye-opening video filmed by Dublin Fire Brigade.

The eight second long video footage showed a disposable BBQ setting the wooden decking underneath alight.

The DCFO said: "’Oh it's alright, I'll have a barbeque, but I'll be careful, I won't let the flames burn too high or get out of hand’ - this video demonstrates that it’s not always about flames when we talk about how fire starts.

“The ground is so dry at the moment that heat transfer can do it.”

The public health message from fire crews urged people to avoid using a single-use BBQ inside, on a balcony or on wooden decking.

Disposable BBQs should be used on non-flammable surfaces, placed away from facia/soffit, fences, trees and other flammable objects.

Precautions include having a bucket of water nearby, not drinking too much alcohol and leaving the BBQ unattended.

It comes as an order which bans BBQs on Bradford’s moorlands is set to end this Summer.

Introduced in 2019, the public space protection order was introduced following a number of fires on Ilkley Moor that year.
