A BRADFORD community centre celebrated South Asian Heritage Month over the weekend.
The Millan Centre, which mainly supports women and girls in the Manningham and Heaton areas, held the event on Saturday.
South Asian Heritage Month began on July 18 – the anniversary of when the Indian Independence Act was given royal assent – and is running until August 17, the date when the Radcliffe Line, which created the borders between India, Pakistan and what is now Bangladesh, was published.
“Our event on Saturday was a very proud moment, celebrating our traditions, culture and food,” said Saliha Sadiq, Vice Chair and Director of Mental Health at the Millan Centre.
“People of all backgrounds - and not just South Asian - came along, despite the rain.
“It was a fun, colourful day and everyone had a good time. It was amazing to see different generations coming together.
“We also had a litter pick in the area, led by the younger generation.
“The community remember their parents and grandparents who came in 1950s and 60s and brought their culture and identity with them.
“My family is from Pakistan, so I know just how important it is to keep our culture and identity alive.
“Thank you to our chair Elizabeth Hellmich MBE, and everyone who supported and came along.”
