A MAN has been forced to pay more than £400 after travelling between Leeds and Bradford without paying a train fare.
Daniel Dockray, 20, of Roeburn Close, Bradford, travelled from Leeds to Bradford Interchange by train but did not pay the £4.70 fare for the journey.
Court documents state that during the train journey, Dockray was asked by the train conductor to produce a valid ticket, which he was unable to do. He could also not pay for the journey he was making.
Dockray was issued with an Unpaid Fares Notice that asked him to pay for the fare within 21 days. He failed to pay within the time limit and was sent another reminder letter, plus a final reminder letter.
"Again he has failed to communicate or to acknowledge this reasonable request, as a result of which the fare remains unpaid," court documents state.
This led to a sentencing hearing, held at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court, on Wednesday, July 13.
He faced a charge of travelling on a railway without paying a fare, which was proved in his absence.
Dockray was fined £220; ordered to pay £150 costs; a £34 victim surcharge, plus £4.70 compensation.
The balance of £408.70 must be paid by August 10.
