TODAY (July 21) is polling day for people across Keighley.
The town's 43,000-or-so registered electors are being asked for their views on the future of the former Keighley College site.
It is planned to build a multi-million-pound health and wellbeing centre on the land, at the junction of North Street and Cavendish Street – which backers say will provide a massive boost to healthcare provision in the town, regenerating the plot and bringing jobs into central Keighley.
But campaigners are calling for the site – which was grassed over following the demolition of the old college buildings – to be retained as an open area, and the ‘health hub’ built instead on an alternative brownfield plot in the town.
Three questions will be put to the electorate: Do you want a health and wellbeing hub in Keighley? Do you want a health and wellbeing hub on the vacant land at the corner of North Street & Cavendish Street? Should the vacant land at the corner of North Street & Cavendish Street be recognised as a public open space?
The debate has divided opinion in the town and it was decided at a parish meeting, held at Keighley Civic Centre last month, to hold a poll to give the whole electorate an opportunity to have its say.
The voting process is being overseen by Bradford Council.
Polling stations are open just between 4pm and 9pm.
Ballot papers cannot be issued to anyone after 9pm, even if electors were in a queue before then.
Everyone eligible to vote will have received a letter with more details about the poll, and the location of their polling station.
Community leaders are urging everyone with a vote to take the opportunity to make their opinion known, whatever their view.
The count will take place tomorrow.
