CHILDREN at a Bradford primary school gave a wonderful welcome to Little Amal – a giant puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian refugee – when she appeared on their playground.

She was greeted with banners, gifts and letters that pupils of Lilycroft Primary School, Manningham, had written and joined in with the children’s games during their morning break.

Little Amal started her journey from Syria in 2021 and has travelled through more than 70 cities in 12 countries.

This week, she is taking part in World Refugee Week by visiting 10 towns and cities across England and kicked off her walk in Bradford.

Lilycroft Primary is one of Bradford’s Schools of Sanctuary - a national network of schools committed to creating a culture of welcome and inclusion for refugees and people seeking sanctuary.

Project lead Kate Hart said: “It has been wonderful to watch the children of Lilycroft welcome Amal so enthusiastically and with such love  – they’ve really demonstrated the strong culture of welcome we have here in Bradford.”
