THE mum of a dad of three who tragically died in a collision near the Horsforth roundabout has launched a petition to reduce the speed limit on the road.

Dean Miles, 49, from Horsforth, died at the scene after he was in a collision with a car on the A6120 Ring Road in Horsforth on May 12.

In a tribute, Dean was described by his family as "full of life and the perfect father who was devoted to his three children".

Now, after the tragedy, Dean's mother Carol Coleman, has launched a petition to change the speed limit and install speed cameras on the busy road.

Speaking with the T&A, Mrs Coleman said: "We're taking it one day at a time. We're still grieving as a family.

"I've launched this petition in memory of my son Dean and hopefully something like this never happens again.

"The road is currently 60mph and drops to 40mph just before you get to the traffic lights.

"I would like to see it changed to 40mph from Rodley and 30mph before you get to the traffic lights at Horsforth.

"I started a petition on change.org and we have over 2,800 signatures in favour of the change.

"I started the petition on June 5 and hopefully this will increase. If we get 10,000 I will go to Parliament If I have to.

"Hopefully, by reducing the speed it will reduce the risk of this heartbreaking loss happening to another family and friends."

Dean's wife, Lyndsay Miles, said: "It's been up and down since Dean passed away. He was a family man and a dedicated father."

In launching the petition online, Mrs Coleman wrote: "On May 12, 2022, my son Dean Miles, aged 49, was involved in a fatal accident on the ring road between Rodley and Horsforth.

"Dean was a loving father of three children. Our aim in this petition is to have the speed limit between Rodley and Horsforth reduced from 60mph to 40mph.

"We also would like to see speed cameras installed on this stretch of road.

"Leeds City Council and the Highways agency have the powers to make this change.

"If we are successful in this petition we can help to reduce further fatal accidents like this one.

"If we are unsuccessful in this petition then it will only be a matter of time before we hear of yet another fatal accident.

"Since the development of the Horsforth Vale the volume of traffic on this stretch of road has increased hugely, and will only keep on increasing due to the development of The Horsforth Fold as will the number of pedestrians."

"Please get behind this petition by signing and sharing."

Mrs Miles added: "People are getting more passionate about this petition. It's up to about 3,000 signatures. Everybody wants change."

Local councillors and a representative from the Leeds Highways met with members of Mr Miles' family and at least 20 members of the Horsforth Vale Residents' Association on Thursday night to discuss concerns about the speed limit on the road.

Cllr John Garvani (Lab, Horsforth) said: "There have been quite a few concerns from residents on the Horsforth Vale estate for a few years now, predominantly to do with the speed of that road.

"It's really sad that it's come to the fore with an unfortunate fatal accident.

"There are already plans in place to get it down to 50mph. It's a step in the right direction but unfortunately, I don't think 50mph is slow enough. It should be 40mph with fixed speed cameras."

To consider making these changes will take time, said Cllr Garvani who added: "The last thing we want is another accident that leads to another fatality."

In addition to lowering the speed limit and installing speed cameras, another issue that was discussed making the main exit from the big Calverley Lane junction left turn only.

A Leeds City Council spokesperson said: “We reviewed the request to lower the speed limit on this part of the road in accordance with Department for Transport (DfT) guidance and found that a reduction to 50mph was supported, rather than 40mph.

“We are therefore moving forward with plans to reduce the speed limit from Horsforth Roundabout to Dawsons Corner and beyond Stanningley bypass to Bramley Town End to 50mph. There will be a public consultation on the proposals later this summer where residents will be encouraged to have their say.

“The speed limit on the section of Bradford Road between Dawsons Corner and Thornbury Roundabout was considered to be appropriate in line with DfT guidance so there are no plans to change this.

“In addition, we are currently exploring whether funds are available for speed camera enforcement in this area.”
